Simple but essential maintenance to prevent oil leaks and keep your axles in top condition.
Equipment needed to change a hub cap
Before getting started, make sure you have:
- A new Stemco hub cap
- A new gasket (Gasket #330-3009)
- A lock washer
- Copper anti-seize compound
- Hub oil
- Your disassembly tools, a scraper, and a clean cloth
15 steps to a successful replacement
- Unscrew the six wheel bolts – Loosen the bolts evenly, without forcing them.
- Check the condition of the oil 1 of 2 – Inspect the color and clarity of the oil.
- Check the condition of the oil 2 of 2 – If it is cloudy or milky, drain it.
- Remove the old gasket – Use your scraper to remove the old gasket without damaging the metal.
- Scrape off any residue – Remove all traces of old sealant and debris.
- Wipe off the oil – Clean the surface thoroughly before installing the new gasket.
- Install the new gasket – Install Gasket #330-3009, ensuring it is properly aligned and free of creases.
- Install a lock washer – Essential for preventing vibrations from loosening the bolts.
- Apply copper anti-seize compound – A thin layer is sufficient to protect against corrosion.
- Insert the first bolt and stabilize – This first bolt will keep the part straight.
- Install the other five bolts – Fasten them in a cross pattern, as you would for a wheel, to distribute the pressure.
- Screw in the bolts – Tighten gradually until the hub cap is flush.
- Tighten the bolts – Use a torque wrench to apply the correct tightening torque.
- Fill with oil – Fill the hub cap with clean oil up to the recommended level.
- Close the cap – Close the lid tightly and check that it is sealed. That’s it!
