What Is a Flatbed Semi-Trailer?

In the transportation industry, a platform semi-trailer is commonly known as a flatbed trailer. Flatbed trailers—available in tandem, tridem and quad-axle configurations—are used to transport construction materials and oversized items.

A flatbed is an open trailer without walls or a roof. Its flat loading surface makes it easier to transport heavy, long, bulky or irregularly shaped cargo that cannot easily fit inside an enclosed trailer.

Loading Tips

Cargo must be securely fastened using straps, chains or other appropriate tie-down equipment. For certain loads, a tarp may also be used to protect materials from the weather.
